MEDICARE-AT-A-GLANCE
Original Medicare consists of Part A and Part B. It covers as follows:
- 80% of everything medically necessary (no vision, dental or hearing), as advised by your doctor, coverage is NATIONWIDE. You will be responsible for the balance of 20%.
- Virtually no pre-authorizations.
- No referrals.
- MOST IMPORTANTLY – NO NETWORKS – see any doctor in any state that accepts Medicare (Approx 98% of all doctors nationwide accept Medicare).
Original Medicare, Parts A and Part B cover you to 80% of everything medically necessary. The job of the Supplement Plan is to pay the balance of 20% after Medicare pays the 80%, and it fills most gaps in Medicare.
- There are two most comprehensive plans, Plan -G and Plan N.
- All Plan Gs and Plan Ns are identical by law. However, different carriers may price them differently, but a Plan G is a Plan G no matter which carrier you but it from – Georgie’s One Stop Medicare Shop or any of the big brand names.
- When you add a supplement, you keep all the benefits of Original Medicare intact.
- You will need a Part D Drug Plan.
When you join an Advantage Plan (MA or MAPD), you will no longer have all the benefits of Original Medicare. Instead, the Plan will now dictate the network of doctors, have a fixed formulary for drugs, and now, because most plans are no-cost to low-cost, you will pay co-pays and co-insurance.
- There are many different carriers, and each carrier will have a variety of plans. Some plans will meet the needs of some – other will meet the needs of others.
- Every plan is slightly different. It is extremely important to stay on top of your Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) each September to verify which of your benefits are changing.
- A good attribute of an Advantage Plan is CMS requires a customer centric star rating system – so you can see how other Americans have rated it.
- Another attribute is you may get some of your ancillary needs met with having dental, vision and hearing – depending on the products your plan is offering.

Check Your Enrollment Window
Medicare enrollment periods are specific time windows when you can sign up for or change your health coverage, driven by the Initial Enrollment Period (IEP), Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) and Special Enrollment Periods (SEP).
Step 2
Review Your Options
The Federal Government provides you with a 7 month window, 3 months before your 65th birthday, your birth month and 3 months after. Why? EDUCATION! This time should be used to educate yourself with a Broker like Jo Gallo so you understand all of Medicare.
